Phases of a Woman’s Life
As your body changes over time, your health needs change too. Learn about the amazing changes and how to stay healthy at each phase.
Adolescents & Teens
Adolescence involves a series of hormonally directed changes in a girl’s body and brain. Although many people think of puberty as an event marked by the first menstrual period, the term in fact refers to the entire developmental sequence leading to sexual and reproductive maturity.
Young Adulthood - 20s
Many women go through important life changes during this phase. You may be settling down with a partner and thinking about children. You may be pregnant or a new mom. Perhaps you’re playing and working hard with a busy career — or any combination of these.
Adult - 30s & 40s
Many women in this phase find life is a juggle. The demands of a busy career, young children and elderly parents may mean there’s little time left for you. Of course, looking after your family and career can be rewarding, but if competing demands or fluctuating hormones threaten to tip you off balance, developing some coping strategies can help.
Mature - 50s
For most women, menopause does not happen instantly or overnight, it is gradual and most women reach menopause between the ages of 45 and 55, the average being around 50. This depends on the individual body development and hormone levels. As you approach menopause the production of hormones (for example estrogen) by the ovaries begins to slow down. As this process accelerates, hormone levels fluctuate more and often a woman notices changes in her menstrual cycle.
Experienced - 60s+
With the menopause behind you and retirement on the horizon, this stage of life is full of freedom and possibility. But stepping into the unknown can be stressful. It takes time to adjust to changes in your daily routine, status, relationships, and financial situation.
This life stage can also throw up challenges on a physical level: cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and obesity are common concerns. Loss of libido and functional fitness can also impact your relationships and wellbeing.
